AEC: What is Bioheat?
Greener Heating

Enjoy Greener Heating Right Now

You are not alone in your search for ways to lower your carbon emissions. From world leaders to your next-door neighbor, everyone seems to be looking to reduce greenhouse gases, use fewer fossil fuels, and keep the earth safe for generations to come.

What we don’t understand is why they all seem to be looking to make changes in 3 years, or 5 or 10, when there is a renewable fuel available right now that can cut emissions immediately, and is getting better every day.

Using Bioheat® fuel in your liquid fuel heating system delivers greener heating right now.

What is Bioheat® Fuel?

What’s in a Name?

You may hear people use different names for Bioheat® fuel. These are classifications based on the amount of biodiesel blended into the fuel.

  • B2-B5 (2%-5% biodiesel) blends are referred to as Bioheat® fuel.
  • B6-B20 (6% to 20% biodiesel) are known as Bioheat Plus® fuel.
  • B21-B100 (21% to 100% biodiesel) are Bioheat SuperPlus® fuel.

To make things easier for our readers, we’re going to use Bioheat® fuel on these pages regardless of the biodiesel content.

Quite simply, Bioheat® fuel is the fuel of the future.

Bioheat® fuel is a drop-in replacement to traditional home heating oil, made from renewable resources like used cooking oils, recycled animal fats or vegetable oils – and it is delivered by local businesses and produced in the United States.

Bioheat® fuel delivers carbon reductions as soon as you start using it in your existing oil-fueled heating system, and it is getting better every day. Within a few years – not decades, but years – your renewable liquid heating fuel provider (the company you now call for oil deliveries) will be filling your storage tank with a fully renewable fuel that will cut your emissions by 90%.

B20, with 20% renewable biodiesel, is one of the most widely-available blends of Bioheat® fuel and can reduce your home’s carbon emissions by nearly 15%.1 But heating fuel suppliers are not stopping there. Across the country, homes are already using blends of 50% biodiesel (B50) and B100 – a fully renewable fuel, which is being paired with solar panels in net-zero carbon homes. The industry has committed to delivering a net-zero carbon fuel to all customers by 2050.

There is no reason to wait. Every gallon of Bioheat® fuel you use reduces the use of fossil fuels. Millions of homes in the Northeast use Bioheat® fuel, and if every home in the region used a B10 blend, it would eliminate up to 100 million gallons of heating oil!2 That’s enough to fill your home’s storage tank more than 363,635 times, and more oil than you’d use in 125,000 years!

Whether you use Bioheat® fuel, Bioheat Plus® or Bioheat SuperPlus®, you are reducing your carbon emissions and making the world a better place! Thank you!
